MINERALS AND VITAMINS CELLS CAN’T WORK WITHOUT THEM
Patterns or recipes for Whatever they are producing. DNA supplies the templates for cells, but to make them available to the production line ‘ involves a vital process called methylation. Its the conductor of your bodys chemical orchestra, and for it to work well you need a good supply of B Vitamins. 1 You re probably not surprised by now to learn that as you get older methylation gradually becomes less efficient, and as a result you feel tired, slow and disconnected, as if your get up and go had got up and gone. To make matters worse, at the same time, your guts are becoming less effective at extracting B vitamins from your diet and so cell processes slow down even more.
CONDUCTING THE CELL’S ORCHESTRA
If everything is working well you’ll rapidly convert toxic homocysteine into mood-boosting SAMe, a highly effective antidepressant, supplements of which are sold over the counter in the US but are only available on prescription in the UK. Homocysteine is just a stage on a biochemical production line methionine from food becomes homocysteine, which should then be turned into several other compounds that are needed in the brain, among other places. Too much homocysteine suggests the production line isn’t working so well.
To convert homocysteine into SAMe requires three particular B Vitamins B6, B12 and folate and also zinc and an amino acid called TMG (tri-methyl-glycine). 80, making sure you’re getting all of these is one of the most effective things you can do to make sure DNA damage is repaired so that your risk of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, and probably heart disease, will be reduced. As we’ve explained earlier, one of the best health checks you can do is to test the level of homocysteine in your blood ).
A recent study in the British Medical Journal found that, among older people, their level of homocysteine was a much more accurate way of predicting if they were going to die from heart disease than more familiar markers such as blood pressure or cholesterol, EEG diagnosis and smoking.70 It only showed that high homocysteine was a marker for cardiovascular death, though, not that it caused it.
‘lhe big breakthrough in showing that lowering homocysteine could actually lead to a dramatic improvement in your health came in a ground-breaking study carried out at Oxford University in 2010. The research found that it was possible to slow or even stop the brain shrinkage that comes with a kind of forgetfulness and increasing vagueness that’s known as mild cognitive impairment by giving very high doses of B vitamins to patients with high homocysteine levels.71 In 2011, the same team published more results showing that the patient’s worsening memory also stopped declining.
Methylation shows just how responsive our genes are to nutrition and a range of other events as well as influences from the outside world.
